I'd like to say that money's tight right now, but that would imply that it's sometimes loose. And let's face it, that's not something someone on an honest cartoonist's salary ever gets to say. And I've had dental work lately, and I'm hoping to make it to MOCCA Fest next year, and there's this orphan puppy with advanced puppy plague that needs raisin cupcakes to survive or demons will tear her apart. So I'm in a bind.
I thought about making a handy-dandy art sheet price guide like other people have done and putting it in the gallery, but I'd rather keep that space cleared for "pure art." So here are my current terms, right here in my Journal where they belong. Right there.
If these prices seem unfair, remember, as a rule I only use 67% of my left brain. Feel free to open communication by sending me a note, e-mail, or trained bat with a banner trailing behind it. I prefer to accept payments via Pay Pal.
Character Illustrations:
Basic B&W: $25
Elaborate B&W: $40
Basic Color: $40
Elaborate Color (Shading, Effects): $55
Additional Characters: + $10 per character in simple work, + $20 in elaborate work
B&W Backgrounds: + $5 simple, $15 fleshed out, $25 if especially elaborate (like a lush world of colorless alien ruins or something)
Color Backgrounds: + $10 simple, $25 fleshed out, $35 if especially elaborate (like a lush world of colorful alien ruins or something)
For example:
This = basically rendered character (with rough cross-hatching) = $25
This = elaborately rendered character + fleshed out B&W surroundings (including props), so that's $40 + $15 = $55.00
This = basically colored character + simple color surroundings, so that's $40 + $10 = $50.00
This = elaborately colored character + additional character + no background, so that's $55 + $10, minus five dollars because it's only the big character's top half and I'm a nice guy who's open to negotiation = $60.00
Sequences / Smaller Comics:
Simple B&W or color: $50
Elaborate color or B&W (shading, crosshatching, gradients): $80
Especially Complex, Detailed Environments: + $10
For example:
This = simple color = $50.00
This = This one is both sketchy and highly rendered, so in discussion I would have priced this as equivalent to a simple B&W job with a complex environment, meaning $50 + $10 = $60.00
Full Comic Pages:
Simple B&W: $95
Simple Color or Elaborate B&W (shading, crosshatching): $145
Elaborate Color: $175
Especially Complex, Detailed Environments: + $35
For example: - (while some of these are technically character illustrations, their size requires me to consider them comic pages)
This = elaborate B&W + elaborate environment, so that's $145 + $35 = $180.00
This = elaborate color + elaborate environment, so that's $175 + $35 = $210.00
All rates are subject to change upon further discussion. I generally decline requests for overtly explicit pornographic material. And I was lying about the puppy. But now that I've proven myself to be untrustworthy, how can you believe anything I say? I might just as easily be lying about not having an angelic plague puppy. If I were you I'd err on the side of caution.

Let's talk about Ukraine offering $40k to Russians
This could actually be important, so I encourage you to SHARE THIS. "If you are a Russian soldier, and you want asylum, and 5,000,000 rubles, all you have to do is surrender and say the word 'million'."

I'm not a very confrontational person. Kinda meek, really. I strive to avoid conflict, and to de-escalate whenever possible. But I also tell myself that I have a responsibility to speak up if I see something objectionable. As Edmund Burke (sort of) said, '“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." That sentiment has often driven me to my soapbox. Sometimes it rubs people the wrong way.
The local post office is conforming to the new normal, as expected. There are markers on the ground to keep people a respectable distance apart, the front desk is guarded by transparent shields, and customers

I'll pay in advance. Like, way in advance. Like, I haven't thought of what I want yet, but your Grant was approved. Get it? Because I donated... and he's on the bill... never mind.
