My Doctor Who by JoeEngland My Doctor Who by JoeEngland
This is my first submission, so I hope it goes down well. It just struck me one day to draw my own Doctor Who, like it seems to strike many artists to do sooner or later. I'm a big fan of the show, despite having seen less than one one-hundredth of it. Maybe one day it'll start broadcasting in America and I'll find that I hate it. Until then, I'll consider myself an enthusiast. It's the mythology that gets me, see... And in case you're wondering (which I'm sure you are), my favorite Doctor's always been Paul McGann. Hey, they say your first is always your favorite.
So call me old-fashioned, but I've often thought that it'd be nice to see the Doctor return a bit to his old age. I just feel that someone called "doctor" should seem wizened to some degree, and it'd tie him back to his earliest selves. So for this incarnation I made him a bit older than he's been, rather universe-weary and sardonic. But still the good guy. I even made my own little logo down there at the bottom, innit cute?
Say, why isn't there a "fan art" category for Miscellaneous Digital Art around here?

EDIT: I have by this time seen much, much more of the show. And I am still a fan.

my first actually isn't my favourite. I have a top three of Troughton, McCoy and Smith and then love them all equally after that. This is pretty cool and I like that it's an older doctor, hoping that is what they plan to do after Matt Smith. Great work

I have to admit, Smith did somewhat change my opinion on the "younger doctors" issue. He's just damn good in the role! Still, I certainly wouldn't mind them getting older actors from this point forward... well, after all, it's not like they can go much younger!

Nice job here, old boy! Very well done, indeed. Although...I would like to know the purpose behind that strange, luminescent blue string you've got weaving in and out of the folds and buttonholes of his waiscoat and overcoat. Care to enlighten me?

Well, he's a bit more blase about adventuring at this point in his life, and really doesn't see the point in hiding his technology away for the sake of appearances. Function over form, as it were. He's often forced to play handyman, and his tools may as well be readily accessible. For example, the wire leading into his pocket usually connects to the latest iteration of his Sonic Screwdriver, functioning both as an auxiliary data feed and a means of not losing the thing whenever he's fumbling or hanging upside down. Should have thought of that sooner, really... I say "usually," by the way, since the wire can be connected to different things at different times. The jacket simply seems to have whichever tool he needs at the moment, though always attached to that same line... just one of his little magic tricks.

Very cool idea. I like your version of the Doctor. Some friends of mine and I did the same idea except we dressed as we would if we were a regeneration of the Doctor, the only thing that is the same between the four of us were fourth Doctor scarves and even those where different. If you would like to see the results of this here's a link to a picture I posted of us. [link]

Found this image an age ago, s#adored it verily, envied it and hoped for some form of realisation in the doctor who tv series. No such luck yet, young doctors get better ratings. I will enjoy faving this.

Hah! Jazzfox said this Doctor was a House/Reynolds mix, and now I keep imagining what kind of Doctor Hugh Laurie would be...

This is a really sweet pic, by the way. I'm a big fan of Zebra Girl, and the couple of Doctor Who pics you've thrown down have impressed me muchly (I'm a new-series fan, with a cursory knowledge of the classic series). Still hoping for some more of the story of this future Doctor from you, though. I'm officially intrigued.
Please?

Your right that your first is always your favorite. That is unless your me, then that can change every now and then.

I think it was a great idea to create your own Doctor!! He looks great, really shows more of a wise Doctor!

Keep up the good work!!

this is great - I'm 100% with you about it being time to cast an older father figure. DT and CE are good, but someone *like* Anthony Head would be better.

Your drawing looks like David Warner in the role...awesome!

Lovely, I love it.

And hrm. In one of the fourth doctors episodes he meets an old friend. And he calls the Doctor by his normal name...
HAha, its funny. Doctors all. "Who are you talking to?"

Meh. Lovely picture. :fav: for sure.

*Cough* Now I wanna watch that episode again... See what his name is... Can't remember...

If you're still wondering, the Doctor was sometimes called "Thete" by fellow Time Lords. As in "Theta Sigma." It's really just a nickname, though. His true name remains "more than a secret."

Yes, I'm fairly sure you're thinking of "The Armageddon Factor," and that is the episode where we hear him called "Theta Sigma." He got the nickname at school, so that's what his old school buddy Drax calls him, along with several variations on the term, though presumably none of them are his real name. You can read all about it here - [link] - a great site for any Doctor Who trivia you may need.

Hrm... No theres an episode with Tom Baker where he meets an old friend from school on Gallifrey, and he somehow reconizes him...
Of course he mumbles the name, and its hard tomake out. But he still says it, at least three times in the episode...
Its the one with that princess there... Keys to Time... The last one...
Before Lala *omg drool* becomes Romana.

He looks a lot like the Doctor in the current American series of the show that's been running on Sci-Fi network. They seem to agree with your thinking of "universe-weary and sardonic", but he also has a good sense of humor at times -- after all, when you get down to it, emotion is all that really separates him from the Daleks, as was poignantly illustrated in a recent episode.

Almost reminds me of the third Doctor mixed with the fourth, and maybe a bit of the sarcasm of the seventh.
But not the sixth. Colin Baker was just plain awful. Down with Perri!

Man, it's great that this is so popular. Here's something weird, though. I just today realized who this is.
It's Peter O'Toole. I really think I subconsciously used Peter O'Toole as a template when I drew this. I didn't mean to, but heck. Why not? Nothing wrong with Peter O'Toole, am I right?
I think he was actually considered for the part, once.

Mmm, in much the same way as your preference to Paul McGann, to me the Doctor has always been Tom Baker. Absentminded, a little vain, and such a SNAZZY dresser. (Yes, that is sarcasm. Feel free to drill holes in my brain if you need to.)

Still, I kind of like your version here. Definitely a world-weary (space-time-continuum-weary) version of everyone's favorite Time Lord.

My favorite's Jon Pertwee (who's my fourth, even though he's the third - I saw Baker, then McGann, then Eccleson, then a lot more Baker.). Nice thing about The Pertwee Era was that a lot of the stories were earth-centric, with a good-sized supporting cast (UNIT) who got a good amount of screen time and character development. Good stuff.

As you'll be able to see it from March on...

I have to say, it wasn't bad at all. Having seen the last few seasons back when they were on air (from behind the couch in our living room, of course... ^^; ) and some reruns in the early nineties, I did fear for a while the new series wouldn't be half as good as the old ones, but thankfully I was very wrong about that.

I have to say I am a bit intrigued by your take on the Doctor... he does look a lot like the Third Doctor, but his dress looks like a mixture of that worn by the Third, Seventh and Eighth... Far cry from the Ninth... :p

They say you can always tell the character of a Time Lord by the size of the sonic screwdriver he carries...oh, that's a walking cane. My bad. So sorry...

Right! Well. Now it'll take another week for the Dr.Who theme to work it's way OUT of my head. *sigh* As CyberSkull says above: nice take on The Doctor. :D

You DO realise of course, that the TARDIS travelling through all manners of space and time, theoretically, you could place your own Doctor into the Zebra Girl story arc somewhere down the line? X3

I'm sorry, lol, fangirl-ish dream come true...

I've seen the full 2005 series, loved it

I know you might like Paul, but for me, Christopher Eccleston was unbelievable...
(Keep an eye out for the episodes by Steve Moffat 'The Empty Child' and 'The Doctor Dances', two parter, BEST of the series, right up there with the Daleks X3 AND won some big TV awards over in the UK, lol)

But yush, I digress, I don't think they'll ever go back to a grey Doctor ^^; They seem to want to bring him to a life of a sex symbol... to some extent >.>;

Think that kind of happened after Tom Baker came on the scene, lol ^^; ::Shrug::

So, that in mind, it's kind of cool to see a spin on that original idea again :3 If they did have an elderly Doctor, I'd have to say this one kind of strikes me as the right typecast, somewhere between Gregory House and Captain Mal Reynolds :3

It's a interesting blend of Doctors... William Hartnal, age-wise... Peter Davidson/Sylvester McCoy for the '?' motif... but the rest is interesting.

Speaking of the Doc, the Sci Fi Channel has bought the 2005 series so it should be on soon.

Great piece of work Joe, dug Zebra Girl and digging this.
